robinson, msnbc political analyst and associate editor and pulitzer prize winning columnist for "washington post" but most of all i can title them both as two distinguished gentlemen from south carolina. gentlemen, good to have you with us tonight. congressman, you first. is the congress -- >> thank you so much. >> is the congress better or worse off with a guy like jim demint? >> well, i wouldn't put it that way, ed. i think that jim is a very principled guy. i never agreed with a single one of his principles, but he's a very principled guy. he is doing what he thinks he needs to do in order to further his cause. he has had some real serious problems with his relationships in the senate. i think all of us who practice politics know that if you're going to be successful in any legislative body, you have to develop relationships with people and people have to feel comfortable knowing that you are going to be a certain place at a certain time. i don't think that anybody in the senate ever felt comfortable where jim demint was on any of the issues, and he had a lot of strained relationships wi

for watching. tonight washington republicans are wasting our time. republicans are supposed to vote on john boehner's infamous plan b at this hour. the house is in recess as republican leaders basically are scrambling to get all the votes. house speaker john boehner pushed for a vote on the bill even though it has no chance of surviving in the senate. it would be veet 0ed by the president if it did. boehner's plan b. it makes tax increases permanent for income above $1 million. compared to the white house plan, basically, folks, it's a joke. president obama proposed a $2.5 trillion package. $1.2 trillion would come from spending cuts. $1.3 trillion would come from tax increases. plan b only includes $1 trillion in tax revenue and the rest of course is unspecified. it also includes no deal on raising the debt ceiling. president obamas latest offer takes the debt ceiling off the table for the next two years, which i think most americans want. boehner flat out lied to the american people today when he announced tonight's vote. >> president obama and senate democrats haven't done much of anythi

, washington correspondent of the nation with the latest on today's fiscal cliff development, and the people who will get crushed if nothing gets done. share your thoughts with us on facebook and on twitter using the #the edshow. we're coming right back. out >>> welcome back to "the ed show." on day when a community laid more victims to rest, on day when a nation stopped just briefly to honor the dead, the national rifle association came out swinging, defiant, paranoid, and utterly tone-deaf. >> this is the beginning of a serious conversation. we won't be taking questions. >> but nra president david keene was just the warm-up act for the gun lobby's number one defender, wayne lapierre. wayne lapierre offered up a televised sales pitch to america, making the case to expand the gun market by demanding more guns in schools. >> with all the foreign aid the united states does, with all the money in the federal budget, can't we afford to put a police officer in every single school? i call on congress today to act immediately to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in ever

say if you saw the poll today in the "washington post," the people of this country are very clear. overwhelmingly say they do not cut social security. do not cut medicare. do not cut medicaid. and yes, to the tune of 74% of the people responding in that poll, ask people making more than $250,000 a year to pay more in taxes. the president has got to listen to the american people and stand firm against the bullies in the republican house. >> here is house democratic leader nancy pelosi today. listen to this. >> yes, the democrats will stick with the president. maybe not every single one of them. but on the cpi, since you bring it up, the chained cpi, the president -- the details of this are not all ironed out. but they all mitigate for helping the poorest and neediest in our society, whether they're ssi recipients, whether they're 80 and older, or whether they're truly needy in between. >> senator, she says other factors mitigate the impact of the cpi change, and she would have the votes. any circumstances under which that you could support it? >> no. i have a lot of respect for nan
